There are, at present, two main forces at work vying for control of our world.
On one hand there are the Theocrats, those self-proclaimed voices of God, be they Islamic or Christian, whose vision of our future reflects whatever illusion of an earthly paradise they personally embrace. Fundamentalist in nature, dogmatic and demagogic, generally misogynistic and invariably led by patronizingly hypocritical old men, these movements seek to impose a repressively paternalistic and socially chauvinistic society upon us all.
On the other hand, there are the Neo-Fascist Global Corporatists, whose ultimate goal is economic feudalism, where a select group of immensely wealthy individuals manipulate governments and economies for their own perverse pleasures and enrichment. They view themselves as a new financial aristocracy and the rest of us as virtual serfs complacently working our lives away as cogs in a well-oiled machine.
Fortunately for us, neither of these two ideologies have, as yet, achieved their goals.
The Theocrates lay claim to massive amounts of popular support, drawn mainly from the ranks of the uneducated, disillusioned, disenfranchised and superstitious, they nevertheless represent a strident and angry constituency.
If left unimpeded, the smart money has to be on the Corporatists to prevail in their quest for global domination. By dint of their wealth, power, and their ability to influence the governments and financial markets of the industrialized world, they bring to bear unlimited resources in their quest for global hegemony. They, either directly, or indirectly, constitute the hand on the trigger of the developed world’s military might.
But they are not there yet.
As long as the flow of information on the Internet remains relatively unfettered and free, the 99% of us who don’t subscribe to either of these two potential outcomes have the ability, through our combined efforts and aspirations, to manifest a future which promotes universal justice, liberty and equality; a future of opportunity, where hard work, integrity and honesty are the keys to success for even the lowest among us, and the wealthy and powerful, in spite of their privilege and influence, are constrained by the rule of law.
A small window exists for us, the 99%, to fundamentally alter the current global paradigm. This window will remain open as long as our ability to exchange information over the Internet remains unrestricted by either governmental mandate or corporate policy.
